Discover the Texas Cotton Gin Museum Tour in Texas
Step into the heart of Texas agricultural history with a visit to the Texas Cotton Gin Museum in Burton. Home to the 1914 Burton Farmers Gin, the oldest operating cotton gin in America still powered by its original steam engine, this museum offers an authentic look at how cotton shaped the culture and economy of rural Texas.
Why it’s special: Nowhere else can you see a fully restored, still-functioning historic cotton gin come to life. The immersive tour blends machinery, heritage, and hands-on storytelling—offering a rare and powerful glimpse into early 20th-century Texas farming.
History/Story of the Texas Cotton Gin Museum
Built in 1914, the Burton Farmers Gin served as a lifeline for area cotton farmers. Using a 16-ton Bessemer engine, the gin processed thousands of bales each season, helping sustain Burton’s agricultural community. After the gin closed in 1974, preservationists restored the complex and reopened it as a museum dedicated to rural Texas history. Today, the site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and continues to operate annually during special events.
