Discover the Reed Gold Mine Tour in North Carolina
Reed Gold Mine is the site of the first documented gold discovery in the United States, offering visitors an immersive look at early mining history. Guests explore underground tunnels, historic stamp mills, exhibits on gold processing, and beautiful forested trails surrounding the mine.
Why it’s special: It’s the birthplace of America’s gold rush — and one of the only places where you can walk through real restored mine shafts dating back to the 1800s.
History/Story of Reed Gold Mine
In 1799, a 12-year-old boy named Conrad Reed found a shiny yellow rock on his family’s farm — not realizing it was a 17-pound gold nugget. This discovery sparked decades of mining in North Carolina, making the state the nation’s leading gold producer until the California Gold Rush. Today, Reed Gold Mine preserves these early mining operations through restored tunnels, machinery, and educational exhibits across the historic site.
